How to check fruit and vegetables for nitrates with Greentest

Greentest is useful when you need a quick household screening before eating fresh produce. It does not replace a laboratory analysis, but it helps you decide whether a particular fruit or vegetable deserves extra caution.

Prepare the product and the tester

Wash the product, wipe the probe with a clean tissue and select the exact product on the touch screen. Acceptable nitrate limits differ between product types, so the menu choice affects the final evaluation.

Fresh, unprocessed produce gives the most stable household result. If a vegetable has already been cut or left open for a long time, its juice and pulp density may change.

  • select the product in the Greentest menu;
  • insert the probe into the pulp without excessive pressure;
  • press Test and wait for the value on the display;
  • wipe the probe after each measurement, especially before testing another product.

Why 2-3 punctures are better than one

Nitrates are not distributed evenly inside produce. Values may differ near the skin, core, stem area or between different parts of leafy vegetables. A single puncture is useful as a quick screening, not as a full picture.

For a more reliable household conclusion, test two or three different spots. If the results are close, use the average. If one value is much higher, choose a safer part of the product or avoid eating it raw.

Interpreting the result

Greentest shows a numeric value and a color evaluation. Green means the value is within the built-in limit for the selected product. Orange means the result is near the limit or deserves attention. Red means the limit is exceeded.

If you see a high value, repeat the test nearby rather than in the same puncture. The previous spot is already damaged, so the probe contact with the juice may change.

Practical advice

For baby food, pregnancy, sensitive health situations or any doubtful result, use the more cautious interpretation. A household tester helps screen suspicious products quickly, while laboratory analysis remains the reference method for official confirmation.

Can I measure twice in the same puncture?

It is better not to. After the first puncture the pulp structure changes, so repeat the test nearby or in another part of the product.

Do I need to look up allowed nitrate limits myself?

No. For household use, Greentest compares the measurement with the built-in limit for the product selected in the menu.
